My career began with the UK Ministry of Defence where I spent ten years, including a stint in The Rt. Hon. Alan Clarke MP’s Private Office, before joining the prestigious Civil Service Fast stream (which has a 2% pass rate) as the first internal appointee in a decade and despite not being a graduate.
I then moved into recruitment and joined Hamish Fulton and Associates, initially as a researcher and then as a consultant, working on a wide range of mainly equity focused UK and Japanese / Asian roles, from where I moved to Tokyo and helped establish Spencer Associates.
Eighteen months later the Asia Money magazine poll of head-hunters ranked Spencer Associates 5th overall in Japan, ahead of many of their much larger and better established rivals.
In 2004 I was headhunted to Hays Plc the UK’s largest dedicated HR Services and Recruitment provider and helped set up Hays Executive, a newly established Executive Search arm focused on global financial markets.
Finally, I joined NMG as Head of the Tokyo office in October 2005 and transferred to be the London based Managing Partner in 2007, growing the business from three offices to seven (New York, Boston, London, Zug, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Singapore) and fifty Consultants.
Together with Richard Hoskin I founded Elbrus Partners in January 2013.
I am a Liveryman and was granted the Freedom of the City of London in 2012.
Together with Mark Jukes I co-founded Elbrus Partners in January 2013. Prior to this I was Head of Equities at Mizuho Securities in Europe from 2006 as MD and Member of the Executive, Risk and IT Steering Committees and also ran the Fixed Income Sales and Trading business for a period as Mizuho re-focused their business on customer rather than proprietary activities.
In 2003 I moved to Sydney to work as an advisor to the Susquehanna Investment Group and was then part of an amicable team move to Evolution Capital Management to launch an Asian Multi-Strategy Hedge Fund, with assets growing to over $1billion in about a year.
My City career began in 1980 as a settlements clerk before moving to trading at Wako. In 1986 I joined BZW and was later appointed as their Tokyo based Joint Head of Japanese Equities.
In 1993 Nomura London headhunted me in to a sell-side role but quickly moved me across to run their proprietary Japanese Convertible Bond portfolio. I then spent seven years at ING Barings in London and Tokyo initially as Head of Japanese Equity and Derivative Trading, then Global Head of Convertible Bonds and finally Head of Japanese Equities.
I am a member of the Institute of Directors and passed both the Institute of Director’s Certificate and Diploma examinations with Distinctions.

I grew up in Rochester where I went to Grammar School and was later part of a family business.
My first “proper” job was as a cashier at NatWest Bank. I then worked in pharmaceutical sales for three years, which I loved. This was the start of my sales career and I worked in a range of industries before selling everything I owned to go backpacking around the world with my best friend. Upon my return I decided I should settle down and joined a recruitment agency in London who offered me a position as a Temps consultant. I loved every second and had a great time building the temp desk to record breaking figures.
After gaining my experience in both High Street and specialist agencies I was offered the opportunity to become a part of Elbrus Partners and set up my own division, Elbrus Partners Office Management.
